Indian Premier League 2022: Shane Watson Appointed Delhi Capitals’ New Assistant Coach

[ad_1]

Delhi Capitals on Tuesday appointed former Australia all-rounder Shane Watson as their new assistant coach ahead of IPL 2022 season. The 40-year-old joins the coaching staff comprising Ricky Ponting (Head Coach), Pravin Amre (Assistant Coach), Ajit Agarkar (Assistant Coach) and James Hopes (Bowling Coach). On his appointment, Watson said: “The IPL, the best T20 tournament in the world. I’ve got incredible memories as a player, first of all with Rajasthan Royals winning it in 2008, led by the incredible man Shane Warne, RCB and then CSK.”

“I’ve got incredible memories as a player, and now coaching opportunities. It’s come to be able to work under the great Ricky Ponting. He was an amazing leader as a captain, and now to be able to coach under him. He is one of the best coaches in the world now. So, for me to be able to learn the ropes under Ricky, I am really excited,” added the Australian.

“With Delhi Capitals, they got great squad, now is the time to win their first title. I am super pumped to get over there, work with the boys, help them out as much as I can and hopefully, we can win the first title. Can’t wait to get over there,” said Watson.

Considered one of the best all-rounders in white-ball cricket, Watson has been a part of two of Australia’s World Cup winning campaigns in the 50 over format — in 2007 and 2015.

At the 2012 T20 World Cup, he was named ‘Player of the Tournament’. Having represented his country in 190 ODIs and 58 T20Is, Watson has over 7,000 runs, and more than 200 wickets to his name in limited overs cricket.

In the Indian Premier League, the Queenslander has played for Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Chennai Super Kings and has won the title twice – with RR in 2008, and with CSK in 2018.

Watson has 3,875 runs and 92 wickets to his name in the IPL, and has often been hailed as one of the tournament’s best all-rounders owing to his consistency.

Delhi Capitals open their campaign on March 27 against the Mumbai Indians at the Brabourne Stadium. The franchise is placed in Group A alongside Mumbai, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Rajasthan Royals and Lucknow Super Giants.

IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) newly-appointed captain Faf du Plessis said “no cricketer in the world” can “fill in” AB de Villiers’ shoes. RCB will be without the services of de Villiers in IPL 2022 as legendary South African cricketer announced his retirement from all forms of the game last year in November just ahead of the IPL retention.

“It’s huge shoes to fill in. There is no cricketer in the world that will try to fill in AB’s shoes. Those shoes are too big. I’ve got big feet but they’re never going to match AB’s feat. I wouldn’t even try, he’s an absolute great of the game,” du Plessis said of his former South African teammate.

Alongside the overwhelming 20,014 international runs in his repertoire, De Villiers also boasts of records of fastest fifty, century and 150 in ODIs.

He also managed to rack up 4522 runs from 157 matches that he has played for RCB at an astonishing average and an electrifying strike rate.

“He mentioned throughout his career that it’d be nice if I could join him yet RCB so the timing is obviously not great now that he has decided to retire and also retired three years ago in International cricket.

“Unfortunately, we won’t be playing together. But it’s nice that one friend replaces another. And there’s something nice to that story,” he added.

Du Plessis is set to lead an RCB side which has the likes of Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell, Dinesh Karthik, Mohammed Siraj, Josh Hazlewood.

Former Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) captain Virat Kohli welcomed the appointment of Faf du Plessis as his successor ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 season. Shortly after RCB announced du Plessis as their new captain on Saturday, the Bengaluru-based franchise posted a video featuring Kohli. In the video, Kohli shared his thoughts on the appointment of du Plessis as the new RCB captain. “As you know that we are going to start our soon pretty soon, something I am very excited for; as I said, renewed energy — really looking forward to this season. First and foremost, the most important news is that Faf is going to be the captain of RCB and I couldn’t be happier to pass on the baton to a good friend, someone I have known well over the years,” Kohli said in the video.

“We have been in touch for many years now and he is one of the few guys that I have gotten to known a little bit more apart from cricket and we get along very well. So, absolutely excited for him to lead RCB, to lead this amazing franchise and to play under him,” added the former India captain.

“The partnership with Faf is going to be an exciting one for the RCB fans, along with Maxi (Glenn Maxwell) as well and the core group that we retained and also the squad that we put together this year, which I think is pretty amazing,” he added.

“The team looks balanced, pretty strong and I can’t wait to get started and to catch up with Faf and the rest of the boys as well and really, really looking forward to this season.  I am very, very excited and as I said, renewed energy and it’s going to be an amazing season to be a part of,” Kohli said.

Virat Kohli “Changed Indian Cricket”, Says New Royal Challengers Bangalore Captain Faf du Plessis

[ad_1]

Virat Kohli might have relinquished captaincy but his energy is something that Royal Challengers Bangalore team will need at every step of its IPL campaign, newly appointed skipper Faf du Plessis said on Saturday. The four-time IPL winner for CSK was on Saturday unveiled as RCB skipper to take the baton from their longest standing captain, Virat Kohli who took charge ahead of IPL 2013. “Even with him (Kohli) not being the captain, that energy he brings to himself and to the team is hugely important for us. We’ll try and use that as best as we can,” Du Plessis said in a virtual media interaction, on the sidelines of the RCB captain-launch event.

The former South Africa skipper further said Kohli has brought about transformation to Indian cricket with his captaincy.

“His (Kohli) performance as a cricket player has been probably one of the greatest, so huge respect for what he’s done not only with the bat in his hand but also in captaincy perspective, he’s changed Indian cricket,” Du Plessis said.

“I’ve seen that happen over time. Playing against India for so long, I could see that shift, his leadership footprint has brought in the Indian team — a competitive, fit Indian team that was fighting fire with fire as no Indian team ever did before.

“He’s got an extremely strong leadership style and that rubs off obviously on players underneath him and that is something that we would still need.

Apart from Kohli, the team has players like Glen Maxwell and Dinesh Karthik, who have captaincy expertise in the franchise cricket.

“So for me, it’s easy to pull that knowledge, but the tricky part is to always have clarity. I think that’s where teams really do well… So I suppose that’s where my responsibility comes in,” he said with a clarity in his mind.

The team will sorely miss the 360-degree AB de Villiers, one of the greatest batters of the modern day game as he announced his retirement from all forms of the game last year in November just ahead of the IPL retention.

Director of cricket operations Mike Hesson however said they would look at different options including that of Dinesh Karthik to play the finisher’s role in De Villiers’ absence.

“In terms of the middle order, we’ve got DK who’s obviously a nice power player and an experienced finisher as well, likely to play that role. We’re not looking to replace AB with one player. It’s an unrealistic expectation, but within the squad and within our batting group we’ve filled a lot of those holes.” “But yeah, there will never be another ABD and if there is one, I’d love to find him and love to watch and play,” Hesson said.

On his captaincy philosophy, Du Plessis said he would look to build a ‘relational’ style in his captaincy and would look to form a bond with his teammates.

“For me, first and foremost, my style would be a relational style. It will be to connect with a player and start to get to know everyone. As I said, I come in from the outside, so the first part of how I suppose the journey for me would be to build relationships.” “From thereon, you try to find out whether small things make each individual tick and how to get the best out of them,” Du Plessis said.

Promoted

Asked about his goals, he said: “I’m not different to any other player. I’m very competitive. I played the game to win. For me, there’s always a real focus on how you do that and the process to get there.

“As a batsman, I want to be one of the best performing batters every time I go out there. There’s an end goal but I focus more on the process and actually looking at them,” he concluded.

Royal Challengers Bangalore Name Faf du Plessis As Captain Ahead Of IPL 2022 Season

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have named Faf du Plessis as captain ahead of the Indian Premier League 2022 (IPL 2022) season. The former South Africa skipper is replacing Virat Kohli as captain of the team, with the latter having stepped down from the role after the IPL 2021 season. South Africa batter Du Plessis was acquired by RCB for Rs 7 crore in the IPL 2022 auction last month. The Proteas star represented Chennai Super Kings (CSK) last season and was a crucial member as they defeated Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the final.

A player with a lot of experience, Du Plessis will be a pivotal figure for the franchise in the upcoming season and was recently backed by RCB’s Director of Cricket Operations Mike Hesson.

“We see him as a highly experienced player at the top of the order. It allows us to look at how we balance our side,” Hesson said in a video posted on RCB’s social media handles last month.

“He is also a really important leader in the group so really delighted to have him”, he further added.

Meanwhile, Kohli recently explained his decision to quit as captain of both RCB and Team India in an episode of The RCB Podcast.

“I’m not someone who holds onto things more than I should. Even if I know I can do a lot more, if I’m not going to enjoy the process, I’m not going to do it,” he said.

Promoted

“Because it’s very difficult for people to understand your decisions unless they are in your situation. From the outside, people have their own expectations ‘Oh! How did that happen? We are so shocked’,” added Kohli, who recently played his 100th Test match for India.

“There’s nothing to be shocked about. I explain to people, I wanted some space and I wanted to manage my workload and the story ends there.”
