Rajasthan Royals Unveil New Jersey Ahead Of IPL 2022

[ad_1]

The Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Rajasthan Royals on Tuesday unveiled the official jersey for the 2022 season. The 2022 Royals jersey is inspired by a unique Rajasthani design called the ‘Leheriya’, meaning ‘wave’ in English. Dating back to the 17th century, the tie-and-dye patterns used in this design result in diagonal or v-shaped stripes, resembling the winds blowing across Rajasthan’s deserts.

The distinctive patterns, usually on brightly coloured cloth, are formed through ‘resist dyeing’ – a technique that is unique to the state.

The complex yet beautiful patterns were eventually patronised by royalty in Rajasthan back in the day, with artisans being rewarded for their work. Not just the jersey, but even the turbans (‘saafa’) that the Royals were spotted wearing on their arrival in Mumbai, are designed using the same technique. An inherently royal part of traditional Rajasthan attire, these ‘saafas’ are commonly worn in the state’s rural areas to date.

FMX legend Robbie Maddison was the star of a jersey reveal project which showcased the colourful city of Jaipur in a whole new light. The Australian daredevil who is also a Red Bull athlete was given the task of delivering the latest Rajasthan Royals’ jersey at their home ground, the Sawai Mansingh Stadium.

He zipped past some of Jaipur’s most iconic locations as well as narrow bylanes on his motorbike to personally deliver the new Royals jersey. Maddison rode all the way up to the roof of the stadium, paused for a few seconds and launched his bike straight down the building and onto the cricket field, successfully delivering the package to Sanju Samson and Yuzvendra Chahal.

“It was really amazing,” said Royals’ captain Sanju Samson, who signed in for the special delivery. “Robbie’s amazing stunts were something that I’ve seen for the very first time in person, having only watched previously on TV. (Would I ever try this sport?) Maybe I’ll try it out for myself also once I’ve stopped playing cricket (laughs),” he added.

The newly kitted Rajasthan Royals will begin their 2022 campaign on March 29.

India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin achieved yet another feat on Monday as India defeated Sri Lanka in the second and final Test by 238 runs in Bengaluru. Ashwin, who picked six wickets (2 for 30; 4 for 55) in the match, became the first player to take 100 wickets in World Test Championship (WTC). Ashwin, who had ended up as the highest wicket-taker with 71 wickets in 14 matches during the last WTC cycle, has already bagged 29 wickets in seven matches so far in the ongoing cycle, taking his tally to 100 in 21 games. Thus, becoming the first cricketer to achieve a century of wickets in WTC.

Ashwin is sixth in the current list of top wicket-takers in this WTC cycle, which is topped by his teammate Jasprit Bumrah (40).

Ashwin also surpassed former South Africa pacer Dale Steyn’s tally of 439 Test wickets to become the 8th highest wicket-taker in the history of the longest format on Day 3 of the pink-ball Test on Monday.

The 35-year-old now trails the likes of Muttiah Muralitharan (800), Shane Warne (708), and James Anderson (640*), Anil Kumble (619), Glenn McGrath (563), Stuart Broad (537) and Courtney Walsh (519).

However, he is third among current active players, behind England pacers Anderson and Broad.

Ashwin is also India’s second-highest wicket-taker after the legendary Kumble.

Promoted

In the first Test match of the series in Mohali, Ashwin had overtaken former India captain Kapil Dev’s tally of 434 wickets to become country’s second-highest wicket-taker in the history of Test cricket.

Overall, Ashwin has taken 442 Test wickets in 86 matches, including 30 five-fors and seven 10-wicket hauls.

India vs Sri Lanka, 2nd Test Report: Jasprit Bumrah, Shreyas Iyer Shine As India Complete 2-0 Series Sweep vs SL

[ad_1]

A bowling attack led by Jasprit Bumrah helped India thrash Sri Lanka by 238 runs inside three days at Bangalore’s pink ball Test to sweep the series 2-0 on Monday. Chasing 447 for victory, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 208 in the second session after skipper Dimuth Karunaratne’s valiant 107, on a pitch that turned from day one. Fast bowler Bumrah ended Karunaratne’s spell and got one more to take his match tally to eight wickets while spinner Ravichandran Ashwin took four over the day.

Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant scored 67 and 50 in India’s 303-9 declared on day two to play key roles in an emphatic victory that left the hosts unbeaten in all three of their home day-night Tests.

India also won the opening Test in three days and this win gives new all-format captain Rohit Sharma a winning start to his Test leadership.

Left-handed Karunaratne made a second wicket stand of 97 before Ashwin broke through for the stumping of the captain’s overnight partner Kusal Mendis, who recorded his 12th Test half-century.

Karunaratne though went on to wage a lone battle and raised his century — the sole hundred for a Sri Lankan batsman in this Test series — with a boundary off Bumrah.

India, who gained crucial Test championship points in the whitewash, remained dominant from day one after Iyer hit 92 and lifted the team from a precarious 86-4 to 252 all out.

Bumrah then returned figures of 5-24 for his maiden five-wicket haul at home to dismiss Sri Lanka for 109.

The series will be remembered as marking Virat Kohli’s 100th Test in the opening game in Mohali, though the star batsman scored just 45, 23 and 13 in the three Indian innings.

The former captain twice fell lbw in this Test to take his average down to below 50 for the first time since 2017, but the crowd at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium gave him a rousing reception.

Sri Lankan quick Suranga Lakmal took one wicket in his last Test and finished his career with 171 scalps in 70 five-day matches since his 2010 debut.

Lakmal scored one before being bowled by Bumrah, who joined India’s team in a rush to farewell the 35-year-old veteran.

The tourists, who lost the opening Test by an innings and 222 runs, suffered a total whitewash after they lost the preceding Twenty20 series 3-0.

Promoted

Players from India and across the world will now assemble for the Indian Premier League, which begins March 26.

Axar Patel Has A Chance To Equal 133-year-old Record In Bengaluru Test

[ad_1]

Axar Patel was included in the Indian squad for the 2nd Test match against Sri Lanka© AFP

Left-arm spinner Axar Patel was earlier included in India’s squad for the upcoming Test match against Sri Lanka in Bengaluru and if picked, Axar will have a chance to try and equal a 133-year-old record in Test cricket. The day and night Test match will give Rohit Sharma’s Team India a chance to wrap up the 2-match series after a comprehensive win in the 1st Test at Mohali earlier this month.

India played Jayant Yadav as the third spinner in the first Test along with Rvichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, but Axar’s availability could mean he gets a go in this match.

Axar made a terrific start to his Test career last year as he spun a web around English batters to help India bounce back in the home series, finishing with 27 wickets in the series. He then played against New Zealand anf picked up a fifer in the first innings of the first Test in Kanpur. This put Axar in a great position to become the fastest to the 50-wicket mark in Test cricket.

But his next three innings produced only 4 wickets and that means Axar now has 36 wickets in his kitty after 5 Test matches.

The record for the fastest 50 wickets in Test cricket was achieved by Australian Charles Turner in the year 1880 and he had taken 6 Test matches to reach the milestone.

South Africa’s Vernon Philander had come close to equalling or breaking the record but he reached the 50-wicket mark in his 7th Test.

Axar needs to pick 14 wickets in his next Test match to equal the record, which has stood the Test of time.

It will be interesting to see whether he gets selected for the match or not and even if he does, Axar will face stiff challenge from Ashwin and Jadeja, who are known for picking up a bagful of wickets in home conditions.

Promoted

But it will be worth a shot for Axar, who will look to cement his place in the team as the third choice spinner whenever India play a Test match at home.

Ravichandran Ashwin was in fantastic form as India cruised to victory in the first Test match vs Sri Lanka, winning by an innings and 222 runs in Mohali. The off-spinner took his 435th Test wicket to go past Kapil Dev’s tally of 434 dismissals to become India’s second highest wicket-taker of all time in the longest format. The veteran cricketer received plenty of praise after the match, especially from captain Rohit Sharma. Speaking to BCCI, Ashwin revealed that he “didn’t know how to react” to Rohit’s praise.

“I don’t know what to tell Rohit. I am very bad at receiving compliments. I don’t really know how to react. Sometimes I can get emotional but I cannot really coin those words when I am emotional. Rohit went out into the press conference and lavished praise on me and I didn’t really know how to react until this morning . At the breakfast hall I said that was very sweet of him”, Ashwin said.

In the Mohali Test, India declared after posting 574 for eight, with Ravindra Jadeja slamming an unbeaten knock of 175 runs off 228 balls. Meanwhile, Rishabh Pant hammered 96 off 97 deliveries. The hosts asked Sri Lanka to follow on after their first innings score of 174 – 400 runs adrift of India’s first innings total of 574/8d.

The visitors could only post 178 runs in their second innings and lost the match by a huge margin.

Ravindra Jadeja received the Man of the Match award for his unbeaten 175 and a total amount of nine wickets.

India will take on Sri Lanka in the second Test Match from March 12 in a day-night affair.

Virender Sehwag Tags Ravichandran Ashwin In Hilarious Tweet After Amendments In Cricket Laws

[ad_1]

Trust Virender Sehwag to always see the funny side of things. The former India opener tagged Ravichandran Ashwin in his latest tweet, congratulating the India off-spinner after MCC, the custodian of cricket laws, amended some laws of the game on Wednesday. One of the noted ones was its decision to move the law relating to run outs at non-striker’s end from “unfair play” section besides completely banning the use of saliva to shine the ball in amendments to its 2022 code that will come into effect in October. Run outs at non-striker’s end have often triggered heated debates on spirit of the game and several players like India’s premier off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin have advocated for it as a fair mode of dismissal.

Indicating that, Sehwag took to Twitter and said Ashwin will now have “full freedom” to plot run outs with England wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler.

“Congratulations @ashwinravi99, great week this one. First becoming second highest wicket taker in Tests for India, and now this. Ab full freedom (Now you have complete freedom) to plot such run-outs with Buttler. Ek karna zaroor (Be sure to do one)”

Ashwin and Buttler are set to turn up for the same team – Rajasthan Royals – in IPL 2022 after the off-spinner was picked up by RR in the auction.

The India cricketer and the England keeper have a fair bit of history between them related to run outs at the non-striker’s end. Ashwin, the Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) captain then, had mankaded Buttler in IPL 2019 that sparked a huge debate among fans and experts.

Ashwin since then has defended his stance multiple times on public platforms.

This new amendment in the laws is certain to please the likes of Ashwin.

“Law 41.16 – running out the non-striker – has been moved from Law 41 (Unfair play) to Law 38 (Run out). The wording of the Law remains the same,” the MCC said in a media statement late on Tuesday.

The MCC also said that using saliva to shine the ball would be treated as an unfair practice. Saliva application was barred by the ICC in view of the COVID-19 pandemic and MCC said its research found that applying saliva had no impact on the ball’s movement.

Promoted

“The new Laws will not permit the use of saliva on the ball, which also removes any grey areas of fielders eating sugary sweets to alter their saliva to apply to the ball. Using saliva will be treated the same way as any other unfair methods of changing the condition of the ball,” it asserted.

“Sweet” Of Kapil Dev To Send Bouquet, Handwritten Note To Home, Says Ravichandran Ashwin

[ad_1]

Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin talks about the lavish praise he got after he surpassed Kapil Dev’s tally of 434 Test wickets to become India’s second-highest wicket-take for the country after Anil Kumble. Ashwin expressed how surpassing Kapil Dev’s tally was never even a part of his bucket list, he added it was sweet of Kapil dev for sending bouquets and handwritten notes to his home. “It’s like a dream. For me getting this number of wickets was never even a part of my bucket list. It was very sweet of Kapil paji, he actually sent a bouquet to my home, and also sent a handwritten note congratulating me on passing him,” said Ravichandran Ashwin in a video posted by BCCI.

“Rohit went out in the press conference and lavished praises on me and he did not know how to react until this morning at the breakfast … that was very sweet. “

“One day, he took me aside and said Ashwin you just come into the side and I appreciate you speaking in the team meetings and all that but you also need to understand why we say certain things,” he added.

“We say it with the intent to make sure that once you go to the Indian team you are not found wanting with your basics and that really opened the flood gates for me and Raman forever. Because I knew this man had the best intentions in place for anybody that walked on the ground inside this team,” he continued.

Talking about Shane Warne’s unfortunate demise, the spinner called him poster boy and symbol of spin of his time. Adding further he emphasised getting better every day with teammates.

“To me, Shane Warne was a symbol of excellence towards spin. At that particular point of time when Shane Warne was literally the poster boy of spin. I am just looking to get better every single day with utmost joy and happiness on the face, and I am enjoying the face and some of the teammates are enabling me to enjoy these moments better,” he said.

Ashwin achieved this feat on Day 3 of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Mohali on Sunday. Charith Asalanka became Ashwin’s 435th Test scalp. Anil Kumble is India’s highest wicket-taker in Tests with 619 scalps.

India and Sri Lanka will now lock horns in a day-night Test, beginning March 12 in Bengaluru.

Rohit Sharma’s “All-Time Great” Comment On Ravichandran Ashwin A “Slip Of Tongue”, Says Ex-Pakistan Captain

[ad_1]

Team India‘s splendid innings victory against Sri Lanka in the opening Test in Mohali was a complete team effort. On one hand, Ravindra Jadeja displayed a world-class all-round effort that included a knock of 175 not out apart from taking nine wickets in the match. Other major contributions included Rishabh Pant’s 96 with the bat. However, one name that may not have been talked about a lot was that of Ravichandran Ashwin. Along with Jadeja, Ashwin was one of the main architects of the win. Not only did he score a half-century, he also claimed six wickets in the match to help his side finish the game early.

In the process, Ashwin also went past Kapil Dev’s tally of Test wickets to go second in the all-time list of Indian Test wicket-takers.

Ashwin received immense praise from skipper Rohit, who even termed him an all-time great. After the match, Rohit had said: “He is an all-time great in my eyes. He is playing for so many years and performed for the country. So many match-winning performances, so for me, he is an all-time great. People might have different point of views but from where I see, he is an all-time great for me.”

However, former Pakistan skipper Rashid Latif said he disagrees with Rohit.

According to Latif, Ashwin is a “great” bowler, but he is yet to fall in the bracket of an “all-time great” due to his performances overseas.

“Ashwin, no doubt, is a great bowler. He has brought variations to his bowling. If you look at Ashwin in home conditions with SG ball, no doubt he is the best spinner in India. However, in away conditions, I would not agree with his (Rohit’s) statement. Kumble was very good, he performed really well. Even Jadeja has performed really well. In the past, Bishan Singh Bedi was brilliant,” Latif said on the Caught Behind YouTube channel.

Promoted

“If we talk only in India, no doubt he is good. I think it (Rohit’s statement) might have been a slip of tongue. It is a way of motivating the players,” he added.

The second match is set to begin from March 12 in Bengaluru.

Ravichandran Ashwin Shares Story Behind Shane Warne’s “Strong Shoulders”, As Told By Rahul Dravid

[ad_1]

India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin said head coach Rahul Dravid was “extremely sad” after Shane Warne’s sudden demise. The legendary Australian cricketer died on March 4 due to a heart attack in Thailand. Warne’s death at the age of 52 sent shockwaves around the cricketing world. Ashwin said he had a chat with Dravid, who had shared the dressing room with Warne for three years in IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals after battling against each other for a long time in international cricket.

“I was talking to Rahul Dravid who was extremely sad. For a spinner, your shoulder and upper-half of the body has to be extremely strong because you have to use many rotations to spin the ball,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

“Because for a spinner to master your craft, you should keep bowling in the nets. More so, if you are a leg-spinner. He had strong shoulders and that was his massive advantage,” he said.

The seasoned off-spinner then revealed a conversation between Dravid and Warne about the latter’s early stages of cricketing career.

“It seems Rahul bhai asked him, ‘How do you have such strong shoulders? What do you do?’ It is such a unique story. There is a sport called Aussies rules football.

“It is sport like rugby. It seems he wanted to play the sport but was not built for it since people who play it are tall and well-built blokes.”

It is a known incident that as a child, Warne had suffered two broken legs when another kid jumped from a height and landed on his back.

With both legs swathed in plaster casts, Warne had to push himself around in a cart, developing extraordinary strength in his upper body.

“So, they used to bully him and it seems he broke both his legs while playing. He couldn’t walk and was on bed rest. For 3-4 weeks he walked or rather floated using his bare hands and those made his shoulders strong and there was no looking back.

Promoted

“That’s what he has told Rahul bhai. We all face obstacles in life, but look how Warne converted it as his success formula,” Ashwin added.

Used To Bowl Medium Pace To Be Next "Kapil Paaji", Says Ravichandran Ashwin

Humbled to have crossed the legendary Kapil Dev’s tally of 434 Test scalps, premier India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin revealed that he wanted to be a batter and used to bowl medium pace as a child to become the next “Kapil Paaji.” Playing in his 85th match, the 35-year-old Ashwin went past the legendary Kapil’s 434 Test scalps to become India’s second most successful bowler in the longest format on Sunday. He achieved the feat when he dismissed Charith Asalanka during Sri Lanka’s second innings in the first Test, which India won be an innings and 222 runs.

“Feeling so humbled. 28 years ago, I was cheering for Kapil Paaji along with my da when he went past Richard Hadlee’s record,” Ashwin said on his Youtube channel.

“Even in my wildest dream, I never thought of going past his tally of wickets because I always wanted to be a batsman especially when I started off as an eight-year old.

“In 1994, batting was my fascination. Sachin Tendulkar was just emerging into the scene and Kapil Dev, himself was a terrific striker of the ball.” Kapil’s 434 wickets had come from 131 matches. The legendary Anil Kumble tops the chart with 619 scalps which he claimed in 132 matches.

Ashwin is the fourth Indian bowler to take more than 400 wickets in Test cricket. He also became the ninth highest Test wicket-taker of all time, moving past New Zealand great Richard Hadlee (431) and Sri Lanka’s Rangana Herath (433) as well, apart from Kapil.

Promoted

“In fact, I used to bowl medium pace on my dad’s advice back then so that I can try to be the next Kapil Paaji.” “From then to become an off-spinner and to represent India for so many years… I never thought I will play for India.

“I am so grateful and so humbled on his achievement,” he said.
